I INSCRIBE….
Partow Nooriala
Translated by: Hamid Zabeti

 In compassion and sympathy with
the mourning mothers of Iran

In the gray crowding of a gloomy room
Among these many pictures, lifeless bodies
I search for you, frantically
You, the one I was looking for, day and night
I wish I wouldn’t find you here
I wish they would send me away
Empty handed, as always

In an opaque picture, a hand moves
Brightens the grimy halo of a dim lamp
And blinks an eye that had kept staring at me

A face blossomed in the path of dawn
Shakes my knees
And my wailing of the untold
Sprinkles on the walls

Ah …., this is my child
,Whose mouth, opened with a smile
.Still has the smell of milk

,Oh, my darling
Your hands sheltered butterflies and freedom
And your weapon was only words

,Intrepid and out of turns
You stood up bravely
And the one who murdered you
Was lower than a sly animal
Crawled in a niche
With a dagger in hand

How did I neglect you
That a bullet from the ambush
?Planted in your heart an eternal rose
Me, the one who half asleep
Would sit at your bedside
Till the middle of the night
Lest disturb your calm sleep
The sting of an insect
Or the noise of a cricket

How could I have guessed
Your delicate body
Would get accustomed
?To the twinge of such pain

No, I will not cry
Will not head out to the street after you
I am closer to you than the breadth

For a moment
Place in my lap your head
that still has the smell of your wounded shoulder

Place your head in my lap
So that I caress
Your feverish long forehead
With the coolness of my hands
And your bloodied figure
With tears of the Mourning Mothers

I know
The gracious earth gives birth
To red flowers and green plants
As did I, when I was pregnant with you

Oh, the innocent, lifeless figures
Swear to your empty beds
We will avenge justice for you
We, the Mothers of *Khavaran
Mothers of Mourning
Mothers of Peace, Mothers of Park Laleh
Who, ignoring the fearful eyes of spies
Will come to visit you
In the city’s parks, with a spread of sun

!Rise
They have come to greet you
The most in-love young men and women
Of “Tamooz”**, the hot summer season
Hand in hand
In a ring of thousand stars
With a green leaf
And a dark blue water lily

 !Rise, you
Whose names are the reflection of legends
And the rainbow of your path
Is inscribed on the orbit of FREEDOM

Khavaran is the cemetery in which the listless bodies of the murdered/executed political prisoners of
Iran are buried

Tamooz means the severe heat of summer. Here it is a reference to the incomprehensible massacre of thousands of political prisoners by the Islamic Republic in the Summer of 1988
